“Szoboszlai’s strike is beyond reproach”
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai of The Kop after his superb strike against Southampton recently, helping Liverpool gain a huge advantage at St Mary’s Stadium.
Playing away at St Mary’s Stadium of the bottom team Southampton in round 12 of the Premier League, Liverpool entered the match with great determination right after the referee’s whistle, especially in the context that The Kop had a great opportunity to create a huge gap with the chasing pack after the second-placed team Manchester City unexpectedly lost 0-4 to Tottenham Hotspur this morning.
In the first half, the ball mainly rolled on Southampton’s field, the away team’s strikers continuously made goalkeeper Alex McCarthy work hard to keep the net for Russell Martin’s army.
However, the balance of the match only lasted until the 30th minute, midfielder Szoboszlai with a thunderous shot from the edge of the Southampton penalty area helped Liverpool break the deadlock.
Starting from a clumsy coordination situation of the home team’s players, central defender Jack Stephens indecisively cleared the ball, sending the ball straight to Szoboszlai’s feet who were standing in an empty position.
Receiving the precious gift, the Hungarian star immediately swung his leg, pinning the ball into the far corner, completely defeating goalkeeper McCarthy, opening the score for Arne Slot’s army.
Witnessing Szoboszlai’s masterpiece, former player Carragher could not hide his joy on television.
“Szoboszlai’s shot was impeccable. It was unstoppable. But Southampton clearly shot themselves in the foot,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
After conceding the goal, Southampton were forced to push up their formation to find an equalizer, but Martin and his team were still completely helpless.
The match went to the 35th minute, the score was 1-0 for Liverpool.
