Manchester United’s poor start to the season, currently leaving them 12th in the Premier League, has placed the entire team under intense scrutiny. With new head coach Ruben Amorim taking charge, the pressure is mounting, as seen in his debut match against Ipswich Town.
Thanks to Andre Onana’s heroics, United managed to scrape a 1-1 draw at Portman Road on Sunday, despite an underwhelming performance.
Alejandro Garnacho, who has scored seven goals in 19 games this season, remains the team’s leading scorer. However, concerns have been raised about his fit in Amorim’s system, which favors two attacking midfielders supporting a central striker.
During a discussion on Rio Ferdinand Presents, United fan Stephen Howson criticized Garnacho’s decision-making, likening it to that of a cat and labeling it “terrible.” He advocated for a front three of Amad, Bruno Fernandes, and Rasmus Højlund instead of starting the 20-year-old.
Ferdinand, however, strongly defended the young winger, exclaiming, “Don’t talk about Garnacho like that. He’s a kid! You can’t expect perfection.” Ferdinand emphasized Garnacho’s importance, saying, “Without Garnacho, nobody is running in behind or tracking back. I’d play him on the left.”
Ferdinand also urged patience, acknowledging the process of rebuilding under Amorim. “We can’t expect them to look like the Sporting team right now. That’s unrealistic.”
Despite his contributions, Garnacho has faced significant criticism, including a recent incident where he was heckled by a fan outside Old Trafford before a Europa League match.
