When Derrick Rose joined the team ahead of the 2023/24 season, he was expected to serve as a mentor for Ja Morant. Although he didn’t make a significant impact on the court and retired after his time with the team, the 2011 MVP succeeded in his role as a guiding figure for the young star.
In an interview with journalist Drew Hill from The Daily Memphian, Morant acknowledged the veteran’s influence.
Last year, Morant faced a 25-game suspension at the beginning of the season and later dealt with injuries. During one of the toughest years of his career, Rose’s presence was instrumental in helping Morant stay focused.
“He’s someone who has experienced a lot in his career, so it was great to have someone of his caliber to talk to and guide me through those challenges. It was also a bit surprising, given his status as a great player. I think we share a similar playing style, which made it beneficial; it helped me keep my focus,” Morant explained. He added that sharing a locker room with the recently retired player significantly contributed to his personal growth.
“It was an honor. Just having an MVP take the time to respect me and share his experiences is invaluable. I became a better person and more mature with him around. It’s something I will carry with me for life, both personally and as a leader of this franchise,” he concluded.
On the court, Rose was initially viewed as a backup who could assist the team while Morant was suspended. However, injuries plagued the entire squad, affecting the veteran as well.
Throughout the 2023/24 season, Rose played in only 24 games, starting in seven of them. He averaged eight points, 3.3 assists, and 1.9 rebounds, while shooting 36.6% from three-point range.
