Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has downplayed the heated exchange between Rasmus Hojlund and Amad Diallo following Thursday night’s Europa League victory over Viktoria Plzen.
After a challenging week marked by defeats to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, along with the unexpected departure of sporting director Dan Ashworth, the Red Devils managed to lift spirits with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback win.
Andre Onana’s error allowed former Burnley striker Matej Vydra to give the hosts the lead early in the second half. However, United substitute Hojlund responded quickly, equalizing before netting the decisive goal two minutes from time, securing Amorim’s first away victory as United boss.
Despite his match-winning performance, Hojlund was visibly frustrated at full-time after being denied a hat-trick in stoppage time. Diallo opted to go for goal instead of crossing, and moments later, Hojlund returned the favor by withholding a pass during another attack.
This culminated in a tense exchange between the pair as the teams prepared to head down the tunnel.
Amorim, recently appointed as United manager, viewed the incident as a positive sign. “Yes, I was aware of it, and for me, it’s perfect,” he said. Asked if the argument showed the players’ passion, he added: “That is clear. When you don’t care, you do nothing. When you care, you fight—with your brother, your father, your mother. For me, it’s a very good sign.”
Amorim emphasized that such disagreements are natural and even healthy in a competitive environment. “It’s normal. I think it’s positive. I let the players and the captain handle it and calm things down. If it gets out of hand, I will step in, but the dressing room is their space to talk and even argue if necessary. It’s a sign they care.”
The victory not only brought United closer to securing a spot in the Europa League knockout phase but also bolstered their chances of finishing in the top eight, which would allow them to bypass the play-off round.
