Manchester United’s players were overjoyed after a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory at Manchester City in Sunday’s dramatic derby.
United had been trailing 1-0 thanks to Josko Gvardiol’s first-half goal until the 88th minute, when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty won by Amad Diallo. Moments later, Amad stunned the Etihad Stadium by scoring himself, securing a victory for Ruben Amorim in his debut Manchester derby as United’s manager.
Footage captured by Mail Sport’s Aadam Patel showed United goalkeeper Andre Onana celebrating Amad’s winner by jumping onto an advertising hoarding in front of the away supporters.
Another video later showed United forward Joshua Zirkzee taunting City fans seated behind the dugout by pumping his fists in their direction after the final whistle. Zirkzee was later encouraged by his teammate, Matthijs de Ligt, to turn away and walk off.
Zirkzee, who had started the game on the bench, came on in the 78th minute with United still trailing. The win marked United’s first victory at the Etihad since 2021 and extended City’s poor run of form. Pep Guardiola’s side has now failed to win 10 of their last 11 matches across all competitions, suffering eight losses.
In an interview with BBC Match of the Day, Guardiola acknowledged the team’s struggles: “Not much to say. No defense. We gave away goals, our fault. We don’t play with composure.”
City midfielder Bernardo Silva also reflected on the loss, telling Sky Sports: “We deserved what happened. We can’t blame luck. We made stupid decisions late in the game, and you deserve to pay for that. Looking at the game, I think there was only one team that could win, but in the end, we lost.”
