Three days after a spirited 4-3 Carabao Cup exit at Tottenham despite going three goals down, Manchester United showed no signs of a comeback in this match, suffering their fourth defeat in six games under new head coach Amorim. His earlier warning has turned into a harsh reality.
The pressing question now is: how much more hardship must United endure? How much further can they fall?
On Boxing Day, they head to Molineux to face a Wolves team seemingly revitalized under Amorim’s compatriot, Vitor Pereira. They then wrap up the year at Old Trafford against a Newcastle side riding high with three consecutive wins and 11 goals scored.
Given United’s recent defensive woes, their upcoming opponents must be eagerly anticipating these fixtures.
Amorim noted that United seemed to have more control in the game against Spurs, but on Sunday, the windy conditions posed a challenge for everyone. Unfortunately, Bournemouth adjusted far better to the circumstances. They embodied the qualities Amorim desires in United: relentless pressing, clinical finishing, and solid defending.
It was hardly a shock when Bournemouth broke the deadlock in the 28th minute through a free kick, capitalizing on United’s continued struggles with set-pieces. Alarmingly, this marks the seventh goal United have conceded from such situations in just six matches.
Manchester United continued to sink deeper into crisis with a 0-3 defeat at home to Bournemouth. In this disappointing match, Amad Diallo was a rare bright spot with a performance full of effort and class. Although the home team suffered a bitter defeat, Diallo’s performance somewhat eased the disappointment of the fans.
Bournemouth started strongly and did not take long to dominate the game. In the 29th minute, Dean Huijsen jumped high to head home the opening goal from a corner kick, overcoming the lax United defence. After the break, Justin Kluivert doubled the visitors’ lead from the penalty spot, after Noussair Mazraoui committed a foul in the box. It did not stop there, just two minutes later, Antoine Semenyo finished off Bournemouth’s perfect combination, making it 3-0, sealing a heavy defeat for the home team.
Despite the defeat, Amad Diallo proved his worth. The Ivorian winger was relentless throughout the game. He created four clear-cut chances for his teammates, made four accurate passes and completed three dribbles.
His passing accuracy was 88%, and he had five touches in the opposition box. Diallo also showed commendable defensive spirit, recovering the ball eight times and winning all of his duels.
