Before the match at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid and Sevilla players lined up in two rows to pay tribute to Jesus Navas. This was the final match of the veteran Spaniard’s career. Navas decided to retire in the middle of the season after two decades of fighting and many major titles, including the World Cup, 2 Euros, Nations League, 4 Europa League titles, Premier League and Copa del Rey.
Modric represented Real Madrid to present Navas with a signed shirt from the entire team. The defender born in 1985 was the only player to participate in the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2024 championships of the Spanish team.
Not only the players of both teams, tens of thousands of spectators at Bernabeu also gave Navas endless applause.
After the final whistle blew, Navas burst into tears at the affection of Real Madrid fans. “I have never seen any team’s fans show such warm gratitude to their opponents as Real,” Navas said.
Navas is fully deserving of the title of “legend”. No Sevilla player has won more trophies than Navas (8), nor has any player made more appearances for Sevilla than the 39-year-old veteran (705). Sevilla’s training ground has also been renamed Jesus Navas to remind future generations of his example of perseverance.
Bellingham expressed his respect for his senior. Navas was offered a contract until the end of the 2024/25 season by the board. However, the former Man City player decided to retire in the middle of the season.
