Russell Westbrook Sets an NBA Milestone in Nuggets vs. Pelicans Game

Denver Nuggets point guard Russell Westbrook entered Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans with a strong case for Sixth Man of the Year. Coming into the matchup, Westbrook was averaging 11.6 points, 6.5 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.6 steals in just 25.5 minutes per game.

Westbrook has often been tasked with closing games for Denver and guarding the toughest defensive assignments, playing a crucial role for his new team. On Sunday, he delivered another impressive performance, finishing with 21 points, five assists, five rebounds, three steals, and one block. In addition to his all-around contribution, Westbrook made NBA history.

With his stat line of 21 points, five assists, five rebounds, three steals, and one block, Westbrook became the oldest player in NBA history to record that particular line off the bench at 36 years old. Derrick Rose previously held the record when he achieved it at 32 in 2021.

A former league MVP, Westbrook holds several NBA records, including some as a reserve player. On Sunday, he added yet another achievement to his storied career.

Westbrook played an essential role for Denver on both ends of the floor, helping the Nuggets secure the win.

After being traded by the LA Clippers and bought out by the Utah Jazz, the Nuggets signed him this offseason. Since joining, Westbrook has proven he can still score, pass, rebound, and defend at a high level. Playing 36 minutes on Sunday, he was heavily relied upon by head coach Michael Malone.

The Nuggets entered the game against New Orleans looking to bounce back after a tough stretch, facing the Western Conference’s worst team. Despite New Orleans’ injuries, they put up a strong fight, pushing the game into overtime, but Denver ultimately came out on top.
