Inʂane, fantastic season by Mo Salah
Liverpool have won all four of their last matches against Leicester in all competitions, scoring 12 and conceding only two goals. The two teams are also showing contrasting forms, as Leicester have just lost two consecutive matches against Newcastle 0-4 and Wolves 0-3 and are struggling with the relegation race. Liverpool are flying high as they hold the top spot in the Premier League with a four-point gap.
But Arne Slot’s team started the game awkwardly when having to play in increasingly dense fog at Anfield on the evening of December 26.
In the 6th minute, Stephy Mavididi broke through on the left wing and crossed into the penalty area. Jordan Ayew shielded well from Andy Robertson’s challenge and then turned and finished to the near corner, defeating goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
After a shaky start, the home team gradually took control of the game and created a one-sided game. Throughout the 90 minutes, Liverpool controlled 69% of the game, with 19 shots and seven on target – compared to Leicester’s 4 and 1.
Slot’s team rose up after conceding the goal, but were unlucky. In the 25th minute, Robertson headed the ball diagonally, hitting the post, the ball hit the back of goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk and went out of bounds. In the 45th minute, it was Mohamed Salah’s turn to hit the woodwork with his signature left-footed curler to the far corner.
But Liverpool did not have to regret for too long. In the extra time, Cody Gakpo shone with a dribble that eliminated James Justin, cut into the middle and curled his right foot to the far corner, leaving Stolarczyk flying as far as he could but could not touch the ball. The Dutch striker reached the 10-goal mark in all competitions this season, including four in the Premier League, four in the League Cup and two in the Champions League.
Liverpool took the lead after the break and quickly took the lead. In the 49th minute, Alexis Mac Allister drifted to the right and crossed for Curtis Jones to score a cross into the visitors’ net. This was the 2022 World Cup champion’s first assist in all competitions this season.
