Bruno Fernandes picks up his third red card of the season after a reckless challenge on Nelson Semedo early in the second half during Manchester United’s clash with Wolves

Bruno Fernandes received his third red card of the season after being shown a second yellow just 90 seconds into the second half during Manchester United’s match against Wolves at Molineux.

The Red Devils arrived at the fixture under pressure, following a humiliating 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, which left them languishing in 13th place under Ruben Amorim’s management. Wolves dominated the first half, with Andre Onana tested by a Jorge Strand Larsen header and Matheus Cunha leading their attack with his dynamic runs.

United needed a stronger second-half performance to lift their traveling fans’ spirits, but Fernandes derailed their efforts with a reckless challenge. The Portuguese midfielder lunged into a 50-50 tackle with Nelson Semedo, catching the Wolves defender on the ankle. The referee showed no hesitation in issuing Fernandes his marching orders.

Replays confirmed that Fernandes was late and caught Semedo, leaving little room for argument. Wolves capitalized on the advantage, with Matheus Cunha scoring directly from a corner to notch his 10th Premier League goal of the season.

This marks Fernandes’s third red card of the campaign, though his dismissal against Tottenham earlier in the season was overturned after a review. In that match, Fernandes was sent off for scraping his boot against James Maddison’s leg during a tackle. A post-match panel ruled that VAR should have advised referee Chris Kavanagh to reconsider the decision.

Following the Spurs incident, Fernandes expressed frustration with the call, stating: “It’s a clear foul but never a red card. Maddison himself agreed it wasn’t a red. VAR should’ve called the referee to review it.”

Despite his protests, United struggled in his absence, conceding two additional goals in the second half. Fernandes later apologized to his teammates, acknowledging the toll his red cards have taken on the team.

The star followed up his dismissal against Tottenham with another against Porto days later

With his latest dismissal, Fernandes has further compounded United’s struggles, as Wolves took full advantage to seal their victory.
