Is Liverpool’s new trio better than the Salah-Mane-Firmino trident?
When Jurgen Klopp built his great Liverpool side, Mohamed Salah was the final piece of an attacking trio that rivalled any in Europe. With Salah on the right providing a flurry of goals, Firmino providing moments of genius in the middle, and Sadio Mane providing brilliance down the left, Arne Slot’s Liverpool machine now has a new that echoes the glory days.
Salah is now the main man, his goal in the 5-0 win over West Ham bringing a remarkable tally: it was his 20th in all competitions this season, a tally he has reached in all eight of his Liverpool seasons. Salah’s goals and assists mean he has now been involved in 52 goals in all competitions in 2024 – 29 goals and 23 assists – more than any other player in Europe’s big five leagues. He has also scored and assisted in eight different Premier League games this season, the most by any player in a single campaign.
“Mo and the word ‘extraordinary’ are things I’ve heard a lot in the last six months and he deserves it,” said Slot. Salah may be the standout figure these days, but he is not working alone as Liverpool excel in the Premier League, where they have an eight-point lead going into 2025, and the Champions League, where they are also top of the table this season.
