Coach Amorim breaks TV in Man Utd dressing room
Getting angry with Man Utd players after losing 1-3 to Brighton in the Premier League, coach Ruben Amorim broke a big screen TV.
According to Athletic (England), this TV is usually used by the coaching staff to show the players match tapes and plan tactics before the match. However, it needs to be repaired before Man Utd host Rangers in the seventh round of the Europa League group stage on the evening of January 23.
Coach Amorim’s reaction shocked many players, despite having witnessed his predecessors getting angry before. The reason is that the Portuguese coach rarely says a word in team meetings right after the match. He usually just stays silent, and waits until the next day to talk to the players when he is calmer.
In the loss to Brighton, Man Utd only had one shot on goal, which was the equalizer from midfielder Bruno Fernandes’ penalty kick. In the post-match press conference, he also said that the current “Red Devils” squad is probably “the worst in the history of the team”. The way he broke the TV reminded many players of the coach nicknamed “hairdryer” Alex Ferguson.
In the four previous clubs he has led in Portugal, Amorim has always achieved a win rate of over 70%. But after 15 matches with Man Utd, he has only won 5 matches, equivalent to 33%. One reason given by the 39-year-old coach is the lack of training sessions to coach the players to play his way. Although he has led the team in 15 matches, Amorim has only had seven training sessions to practice tactics.
“To help the players, I have to convey the idea of playing football, but it is difficult to do that without training sessions,” he said. “Towards the end of the match, the players are no longer in position. I don’t want to see that. Even if we lose, we have to move to the right position.”
After the 3-1 comeback win over Southampton almost a week ago, Amorim also spoke for 20 minutes with the club’s co-owner Jim Ratcliffe. The two discussed transfer plans in the last two weeks of January. Man Utd are expected to add a left-back and the player they are targeting is Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in Serie A.
Man Utd are seventh in the Europa League after three consecutive wins. They can aim for a higher position as they only have to host Rangers in the penultimate round. However, the Scottish representative is also eighth and ready to cause a surprise at Old Trafford, because the “Red Devils” have lost four of their last five matches.
