According to The Sun, Ratcliffe is expected to lay off between 100 and 200 more staff at Old Trafford in the upcoming streamlining. The 72-year-old billionaire spent £1 billion to buy a 27.7% stake in MU last year. Since then, he has been aggressively restructuring the club’s finances.
Last July, Ratcliffe sacked 250 of the club’s 1,150 employees. He also angered fans by cutting the salaries of club ambassadors, including legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
According to The Guardian, Ratcliffe has expressed that he has no choice but to cut costs across the entire club system. MU has lost £300m in the past three years, and Ratcliffe believes it will take two seasons to recover the financial situation.
Insiders have revealed that without Ratcliffe’s £240m investment last year, United could have run out of cash to operate. Despite knowing that these austerity measures are unpopular with fans, Ratcliffe has stuck to them.
Almost every United player could be up for sale in the summer, as the club looks to balance its books. This season has been extremely disappointing, with the Red Devils languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
