With the release of “Over Each Other” as the third single from their upcoming From Zero album, Linkin Park continues to give us hints of the band we fell in love with in the early 2000s. The fact that Emily Armstrong, the new vocalist, is assuming the lead is one change, though. Instead of splitting lead vocals between Linkin Park’s vocalists as is customary, Armstrong handles them altogether.
With the new song “Over Each Other,” Linkin Park has once again demonstrated their ability to turn even the most difficult parts of a difficult circumstance into something that is ultimately relatable, which was one of the things that made them so famous.
The song’s title phrase is used in a variety of ways to tell the story of a failing relationship. Emily Armstrong says, “All we are is talking over each other,” early in the song, describing the relationship’s greatest collapse in which both parties air their complaints without truly listening to one another.
Armstrong again asks, “Are we over each other?” as the song later transforms the title phrase into a moment of introspection. As she pleads with her companion, “So say what’s underneath / I want to see your side / We don’t have to be talking / Over each other,” there is eventually hope toward the end of the song.
“Being my first solo vocal in Linkin Park, this song holds extra special meaning for me. Armstrong exclaims, “It’s unbelievable that I’m saying that.” Mike and I co-wrote the lyrics for this song because I progressively began to contribute more to the music-making process as I spent more time with the band over the past year. Additionally, it’s a dream come true to be filming this video with Joe in Korea, says Armstrong.
As he has done so often in the past, Joe Hahn has stepped back behind the camera to direct this most recent video from Linkin Park, so there’s also another touchtone to identify. Onscreen, this one takes a somewhat tragic turn.
“I’ve always wanted to oversee a project in Korea, and now it’s a reality! After our performance in Seoul, Emily and I stayed for a few more days, and we are really appreciative of the cast and crew for their assistance. We wanted it to seem like a real K-drama, so we really embraced the K-ness of it all. “We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do,” Hahn says.
