This summer, LeBron announced that he would be rejoining his old team, the Miami Heat, after he famously abandoned his birthplace of Cleveland, Ohio to play basketball for them.

In his SI.com essay announcing his intention to rejoin the Cavaliers after four seasons with the Heat, James stated, “I always thought that I’d return to Cleveland and finish my career there.”

Married last year: James proposed to Brinson - who is his high school sweetheart - on December 31, 2011, at a New Year's Eve party

LeBron’s return to Cleveland follows a contentious breakup that was made public on national television, during which he left his hometown to pursue his skills in South Beach.

He thought that leaving Northeast Ohio would never be permanent, even though he had finally received the championship rings he had so desperately desired while playing for the Cavaliers. He likened it to college.

Basketball is only one aspect of my bond with Northeast Ohio. That was unknown to me four years ago. Now I do. “I’m prepared to take on the challenge,” James declared. “I’m heading home.”

On October 30, the squad plays the New York Knicks in the first game of the regular season.
