Real Madrid are reportedly preparing to appoint Xabi Alonso as the club’s next manager, as Carlo Ancelotti’s future becomes increasingly uncertain following their recent Champions League exit.

Ancelotti, 65, refused to confirm his long-term plans when questioned ahead of Los Blancos’ upcoming clash with Athletic Bilbao. With doubts surrounding his future, reports from The Athletic claim Real Madrid officials have already approached Alonso about stepping into the role.

Currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso has enjoyed immense success in Germany, guiding his side to a Bundesliga title, DFB Pokal victory, and a spot in the Europa League final last season. The 43-year-old, who previously played under Ancelotti at both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, is now the leading candidate to take over if the Italian departs.

Ancelotti is heavily linked with the vacant Brazil national team job ahead of the 2026 World Cup. A representative from Brazil’s football federation was reportedly present at Madrid’s recent clash with Arsenal, fueling speculation.

Despite the pressure, Ancelotti emphasized that his focus remains on the competitions at hand, including the upcoming Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on April 26 and the inaugural Club World Cup later this year.

“We’re still competing for trophies,” Ancelotti said. “At the end of the season, I’ll talk with the club.”

While Ancelotti led Madrid to LaLiga and Champions League glory last season, a trophyless campaign could bring his second spell at the Bernabéu to a close—potentially opening the door for Alonso’s return.
