Carlo Ancelotti’s second stint at Real Madrid is reportedly set to end at the season’s conclusion, with the Italian ready to take on a major international role.
Ancelotti’s contract at the Bernabeu runs until 2026, but The Athletic reports a decision has already been made regarding his future.
Madrid suffered a 3-2 loss to Barcelona in Saturday’s Copa del Rey final and were eliminated from the Champions League by Arsenal earlier this month.
With five La Liga matches remaining, they are four points behind Barcelona in the standings, which will mark the final games of his tenure.
Brazil has been working hard to appoint Ancelotti as soon as possible, and The Athletic reports that they will do so once the league season concludes, meaning he won’t be in charge for this summer’s Club World Cup.
Diego Fernandes, an intermediary for the Brazilian Football Federation, was seen attending Saturday’s final in Sevilla and is understood to have discussed with Ancelotti taking over from Dorival Junior, who was sacked following Brazil’s 4-1 defeat to Argentina in World Cup qualifying last month.
Carlo Ancelotti will reportedly say goodbye to Real Madrid at the end of the season.
Ancelotti’s team lost to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on Sunday.
Fernandes has spent increasing time in Spain over recent months trying to convince Ancelotti to become Brazil’s coach ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay in June, and miss Madrid’s participation in the Club World Cup.
Xabi Alonso, a former Real player and current Bayer Leverkusen manager, is being tipped as Ancelotti’s successor.
Sources close to the deal say Fernandes has been ‘tactful and diplomatic’ in efforts to secure an early release for Ancelotti, which would be seen as a sign of respect between the coach and Real president Florentino Perez, rather than a breakdown in their working relationship.
Ancelotti’s contract runs through 2026, but when asked about his future after Saturday’s final, he said: “I could stay at Real Madrid or maybe leave. We will see. This will be a topic for the coming weeks, not for today.”
