Real Madrid are reportedly in advanced talks to sign William Saliba from Arsenal and see a summer transfer as a top priority.
WHAT HAPPENED?
According to L’Équipe, the Spanish giants have been in contact with Saliba’s representatives “for weeks” and plan to make an approach to Arsenal in the coming months. Madrid view the French defender as a long-term leader in their backline.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Real Madrid have dealt with major injury issues in defence this season, with both David Alaba and Eder Militao missing long spells. Saliba, now considered one of the world’s best centre-backs, could strengthen their defensive unit significantly.
DID YOU KNOW?
Saliba has only two years remaining on his Arsenal contract, which could be the club’s final chance to sell him for a large fee. While Arsenal have offered him a renewal, L’Équipe claims Madrid may be the only club capable of convincing him to leave.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR SALIBA?
Saliba’s next outing for Arsenal is against PSG in the Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday, with the Gunners trailing 1-0. They then visit Anfield to face Liverpool in the Premier League.
