Liverpool risks making ‘one of the stupidest moves in modern football’ over new Salah deal as fans express frustration

Liverpool fans are voicing their concerns about the delay in securing a new contract for Anfield icon Mohamed Salah, especially since the forward has expressed his desire to remain at the club.

The Reds are in discussions with agent Ramy Abbas regarding a contract extension, with Fabrizio Romano revealing the two key issues causing the delay and noting that “several sides” are monitoring the situation closely.

Salah’s current contract expires in just under eight months, and he will be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with any overseas club in just 29 days. Despite his wish to stay at Liverpool, the lack of progress has frustrated the player, who has publicly stated he wants the matter resolved.

As the January 1 deadline approaches, Romano has provided an update on Salah’s status, dispelling rumors of a move to PSG and identifying the two obstacles Liverpool must address to secure Salah.

Fans are growing impatient about why one of the world’s best players without a contract beyond 2025.

Reddit user Spglwldn commented: “Even £400k a week over two years with a £20m signing bonus totals £60m, and you won’t find a replacement who offers what he does for that price. He’s also naturally fit and rarely injured. If they don’t renew him, it will be one of the dumbest moves in modern football.”

User Bagstone added: “There must be something going on that we don’t know about, like him or his agents requesting conditions that are hard to meet. Given that everyone knows he really wants to stay, along with his value to the club and public support for him, it’s hard to believe FSG is just being foolish. There must be more to it. He’s always said he wants to stay, but I don’t recall him saying he wants to stay at all costs. Maybe he’s asking for something that could disrupt the locker room…”
